Recent Excavations

Excavations in 1998 and 1999, funded partly by the City Univ. of New York and partly by the National Park Service, were designed to provide more detailed information about two of the house-mounds at Shiloh.

Small-diameter coring was used to attempt to identify house-mounds with burned houses, but though this was successful near the center of town none of the >20 house-mounds cored near the edge of town had evidence of burned structures.  The two house-mounds selected for excavation were Mound N (as identified by Roberts), and Mound 7 (as identified by Welch).  Locations of these two house mounds are shown on the site map [Figure 2].

These two house-mounds differed not only in their location within the site.  Mound N was wider than Mound 7 (10-12 m vs. 8 m), and taller (approx. 90 cm vs. approx. 40 cm).  The two mounds also were formed in entirely different ways.
