Another kind of problem comes from ignoring complex site histories. There are genuinely late materials at Etowah, particularly in the so-called "village" areas, but there is no reason to assume that these are contemporary with the Mound C burials.
The "rattlesnake" -- that is to say herpetomorphic -- gorgets from Etowah fit into a different and distinct iconographic tradition that does not have its roots at Etowah, but rather is both demonstrably late and originates well to the north of the localities in which Hightower gorgets were made.
